Bush lost the debate tonight. But then again, how could he really win. He's wrong on just about every issue. But that aside, his performance tonight was a loss. Kerry made some great points, particularly Bush's plan for 14 permanent military based in Iraq or US troops guarding the oil ministry in Iraq but not the Nuclear materials. Kerry also beat back Bush on the flip-flop issue. Kerry made clear how is position has been consistent, while Bush could only repeatedly insist that it wasn't. When Jim Leher asked about character and then Kerry and Bush got into their awkward praise for each other. But then Kerry made a very smart move. He questioned Bush's certainty. To paraphrase he said, "You can be certain and be wrong." He went further to say, you can be certain about a principle but then learn more facts and change operate while still holding on to the principle.
Unfortunately for Kerry, it doesn't matter who really won tonight, what matters is how the media will spin the debate. Fortunately for Kerry and for everyone else in this country, he didn't screw up. I would have loved it if Kerry was more on the attack, but he's no Howard Dean. I'm feeling confidant in a Kerry victory after this debate, but that doesn't mean its time to slack off.
